Vulture Reviews: Trolls

Welcome back to Vulture Reviews. Well this is a review I was not looking forward to. I have a bit of history with the movie Trolls because even when I was little vulture chick, I absolutely despised this movie, and I pretty much would like anything at that time! It pretty much became a running gag with my family how much I hated the Trolls franchise. So if you couldn't tell, I have a bit of a personal grudge to this. Will my thoughts on this film back then be validated, or was my grudge just another part of younger me being stupid? Shall we begin?

Positives-There is only one big positive I can give this film, and that is the animation. It has a similar look to video games like Yoshi's Woolly World or Kirby's Epic Yarn where everything seems to be made of scrapbooking and it gives of the feel like this is a child's imagination world. It's extremely colorful and is filled to the brim with creativity like with the creatures in the forest or the trolls' hair can move. So...yeah, that's the only thing I legitimately really like about this film which means it's time to rip this movie a new one!

Negatives-Starting with this movie's story, it is INCREDIBLY bland. You can blatantly tell whatever is about to happen at any plot point. The obvious twist villain, the main characters arguing, the good guys' low point (which they DESPERATELY try to make you sympathize for), you name it, it's in here! A lot of this complimented with an annoying overly happy tone that makes me wanna barf glitter. None of this is helped by the sense of comedy which is really juvenile consisting of lousy references that felt instantly dated. It tries to have self-aware humor that makes fun of itself, but it comes off as awkward more than anything.

Time to talk about the characters. Starting with Poppy, she has got to be one of the worst main characters from a DreamWorks film along with Oscar from Shark Tale. Not only is she really annoying with her overly happy personality, but she gets incredibly unlikeable with how she tries to force that personality onto everyone around her. Branch is one of the less bad characters in the movie, but he contributes to a big problem I'll get into soon. The other Trolls just contribute to the movie's annoying tone with their voice actors phoning it in. As for the Bergens, they're just the generic villains.

For some reason, there is this subplot regarding a Bergen who's in love with the Prince. It is, again, insanely predictable and it feels as though it is only there to force in the movie's theme of happiness. But I guess we should talk about what I consider the worst thing about the movie, the reason Branch doesn't sing. If you want a more in depth look at it, watch Joey T's video on it.

Long story short, Branch's grandma was eaten by a Bergen trying to save Branch while he was distracted singing. The movie goes on to basically say you should just push down your grief or other negative emotions just to be happy. What a great message!

Overall-Trolls is possibly one of the worst DreamWorks movies. It may have great visuals, but it has unlikeable and bland characters, an obnoxious tone, a predictable plot, and a terrible message. Maybe it's just my bias from when I was younger, but I don't care.

3/10
